This section will briefly describe four electrodes that are commonly used for maintenance and repair welding of mild steel. There are many other electrodes available for the welding of other kinds of metals. Check with your local welding supply dealer for the electrode that should be used for the metal you want to weld.
E6010 This electrode is used for all position welding using DCRP. It produces a deep penetrating weld and works well on dirty, rusted, or painted metals
E6011 This electrode has the same characteristics of the E6010, but can be used with AC and DC currents.
E6013 This electrode can be used with AC and DC currents. It produces a medium penetrating weld with a superior weld bead appearance.
E7018 This electrode is known as a low hydrogen electrode and can be used with AC or DC. The coating on the electrode has a low moisture content that reduces the introduction of hydrogen into the weld. The electrode can produce welds of X-ray quality with medium penetration. (Note, this electrode must be kept dry. If it gets wet, it must be dried in a rod oven before use. )
It is hoped that this basic information will help the new or home shop welder identify the various types of electrodes and select the correct one for their welding projects.
Item | Main Applications |
D167 | Used for surfacing welding on wornout parts of agricultural and construction machinery, etc., such as large type dozers, idler wheels of power shovels, endless chains of automobiles, etc. |
D207 | Used for surfacing welding on worn-out parts of bulldozer blades, airscrews, etc. |
D212 | Used for single layer or multilayer surfacing welding on the surfaces of all kinds of wornout parts, such as gears, buckets, mining machinery, etc. |
D256 | Used for surfacing welding on parts of all kinds of crushers, highmanganese steel rails, buckets, bulldozers, etc., which may easily be worn out due to impact. |
D277 | Suitable for surfacing welding on parts of water turbines wornout by atmospheric corrosion, such as blades and water blades of water turbines, etc. At the same time, it is also suitable for surfacing welding on highmanganese steel parts requiring high wearresistance and toughness, such as railway switches, screw conveyers, bulldozer blades, grab buckets, crushing blades, etc. |
D307 | Able to be used for surfacing welding on cutter blanks made of mediumcarbon steel (such as 45 and 45Mn steel) to make blades so as to be used as substitute solid high speed steel, and also used for surfacing welding and repairing of worn-out cutters and other tools. |
D317 | Suitable for surfacing welding on cold-punching dies, and also used for surfacing welding on general cutting tools. |
D507 | This is a kind of universal electrode used for surface overlaying, used for surfacing welding on axles, valves, et. Made of carbon steel or alloy steel below 450degree. |
D512 | D512 is a kind of universal electrode used for surface overlaying. The surfacing layer is harder, more wearresistant and more intractable than D502. Used for surfacing carbon steel or lowalloy steel axles, valves for overheated steam, blades of mixers, blades of screw conveyers, etc. |
D557 | Suitable for surfacing welding high-pressure valve under temperature of 600degree. |
D608 | Used for welding parts of agricultural machinery, mining equipment, etc. which receive grit wear and slight impact. |
D707 | Used for surfacing welding on intense rock wearresistant machinery elements, such as blades of concrete mixers, blades of bulldozers and pumps, blades of dredgers, high speed sand mixing boxes, etc. |
